Update on outreach in this time of the COVID-19 virus epidemic
SAFPAW can not carry on as before, but we cannot abandon the animals and people we serve. So this requires being cautious, and we will abide by that need.
However as we are asking those struggling with homelessness and poverty to stay at their camps and in their apartments.......we are also struggling with area feedings that are closing down. So how do we ask them to go without food? Without being able to work day labor or fly a sign, and with those avenues drying up it is going to become even harder to survive homelessness, much less come back from the brink.
During this dangerous outbreak, we will be doing all we can to bring sack lunches out to those we serve. We are wanting to aim for at least 2 times a week. We will also be handing out these flyers on how to stay as safe as possible while living homeless in the time of an epidemic known as COVID-19.
We will include hand sanitizer to the degree that we can, but as you know this is a commodity that is hard to find. There is no more that we can find to buy, so if you have a few bottles to spare please drop them off on our porch at our SAFPAW / Perian's Place. We also need baby wipes, 4-6 man size tents, sleeping bags and camping stoves plus propane.
If we make sure that everyone we serve has a camping stove then we can further help them with food while the feedings are closed. This way folks can stay close to camp rather than risk their health while trying to eat.
That is where our need for you comes in. During this time of fear and anxiety, the last thing on our minds is donating. But this is when we need you the most. We can, will and do practice social distancing and working from home as much as possible. But we cannot leave the people and animals we serve alone during this time. I will not abandon those we serve, but rather we will find a way to safely serve.
And please, we need your continued support in the form of financial donations as well as items such as tents, sleeping bags, camping stoves and propane. Also dry dog and cat food. We also need gift cards to Walmart so that we can order food supplies for food boxes.
The needs served by SAFPAW never go away. Poverty remains as it has before the virus outbreak and as it will afterwards. It is my hope after we defeat COVID-19 we turn our attention to the defeat of poverty and homelessness and housing insecurity.
Thank you,
The SAFPAW team
